Learning outdoors, moving our bodies, and nourishing ourselves with mostly plant-based, whole-food snacks are important aspects of our lives at Grassroots Middle. We understand the significance of incorporating these elements, especially for our students, who benefit greatly from an outdoor learning space full of urban gardens and native plants.


 

Why Do We Focus on Middle School Years Outdoors?


Nature education has been targeting our earliest learners for a good reason—children need play and a foundation in nature. But spending time outdoors has numerous benefits for all humanity's physical and mental well-being. Whether taking a walk in the park, hiking, or simply relaxing in a garden, being in nature can help reduce stress, improve mood, and increase overall happiness. The fresh air and sunshine invigorate our senses and provide a much-needed break from screens and technology. If there is any group that can use a break from screens, reduction of stress, and improvement of mood (while in a major life transition) it's our sweet middle schoolers!


Physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Grassroots Middle encourages students to engage in various outdoor activities, from tending to the garden and participating in nature walks to playing an old-school game of tag. Movement outdoors not only promotes fitness and strength but also enhances cognitive function and creativity.


The importance of a healthy diet in conjunction with outdoor activities cannot be understated. Consuming nutritious, plant-based snacks fuels our bodies and supports our immune system and overall health. At Grassroots Middle, we provide our students with daily wholesome snacks to complement their active lifestyles and promote well-being.
